Mission Mission posted about these great t-shirts that celebrate the “Gangs of San Francisco.” Other gangs include the Sutro Speedsters, an ice-skating team from 1897 and the Bear Flag Rebels of 1846. Each shirt has a bit of history about the city included. It’s a fun way to learn more about the city and declare your allegiance to a particular neighborhood.

- TV vs the Movies: Which Does Better by Women?Cross-posted at BlogHer. I live in Los Angeles where saying that you don’t like movies is tantamount to claiming atheism in a church. But I don’t like movies, generally speaking. In contrast, I quite like TV. Does this seem weird? The Geena Davis Institute on Gender and Media offers a clue as to why I might lean towards television. The Institute did a conte […]Lisa Wade, PhD
- Geomedia[Image: "Laser Cut Record" by Amanda Ghassaei]. An incredible example of what can be done with laser-cutting, Amanda Ghassaei's project "Laser Cut Record" features music inscribed directly into cut discs of maple wood, acrylic, and paper, resulting in lo-fi but playable records. For what they are, the otherwise scratchy and off-kilte […]Geoff Manaugh

That is, does legalizing the aborting of a fetus in the womb create a cultural, moral climate where people feel free to kill newborn babies? It’s not a new argument. I recall a 1998 Peggy Noonan op-ed in the Times, “Abortion’s Children,” arguing that kids who grew up in the […]Jay Livingston, PhD

I am guilty of all the smartphone sins—in essence, staring at the phone when you should be staring at life. It’s possible that th […]

My first impulse was to try to seem like a pro, and make up some bullshit. But I reconsidered, and answered honestly. Palaeontological illus […]
