I’ve only used the other kind you mention. They’re definitely helpful when drawing plan maps.
I haven’t really updated my dig kit in a while, since it’s all survey these days. I’m trying to find a good, durable pair of gloves that fits and don’t cost 30 bucks. I guess I might also need to shell out for a new compass (since the one I found in the work truck probably has another owner).
It’s all about clothes. I finally ponied up some cash for a good quality, lightweight rain jacket since I hate my poncho. I’ll be buying a half dozen or so long sleeve wicking shirts and some steel toe cowboy-style work boots soon too, for Oklahoma.

I just tried to order a metric folding rule and they’re backordered from just about every place I looked at. I can’t imagine that there are a lot of other fields that use metric folding rules in the US. Must be the beginning of the field season.
